Sicilian reality in the feld of tomato cultivation

The Cooperative “Rinascita” was founded in 1977 when three small young farmers launched the enterprise project capable of tackling the many difficulties involved in managing the marketing of tomatoes.
The ever-increasing tomato production in the Valledolmo area has given rise to a considerable volume of exports to canning factories in Bagheria, Partinico, Comiso and Palermo.

Naturally “in Siccagno”

The farmers of Valledolmo for several generations have completed the ripening cycle of the tomato without adding water.
This is achieved thanks to a cultivation technique (“in Siccagno”) which makes the most of the properties of the soil, which have Montmorillonitic clay or Pliocene sands mixed with clay with good agronomic fertility and water self-regulation in periods of drought.

Intense red colour

“Siccagno” tomato plants are grown on land in inland Sicilian municipalities in the lower Madonie mountains, specifically in Valledolmo, Sclafani Bagni, Alia, Caltavuturo, Castellana Sicula, Polizzi Generosa, Vallelunga, Villalba and Marianopoli.
The tomatoes are harvested by hand and processed fresh (within 24 hours). They contain little water, lots of pulp and a high sugar content.

Technologically advanced methods and machinery

The “Siccagno” tomato undergoes quality control (verification of the quality standards, verification of the optic residue and determination of the acid value), as well as quantity control (weighing) and, only if it conforms, it is stored in a special area pending processing.
At the end of the previous stages, the production batch to be attributed to the farmer is determines and the data collected are entered in a special register in order to be used for the product traceability in compliance with EC Regulation 178/2002.

Sustainability

Environmental sustainability refers to the concept of maintaining behaviours and habits over time in order to develop a virtuous socio-economic system. This implies a balance between the consumption of resources and their regeneration, as well as between the production of pollutants and their natural elimination.

Territoriality

Local varieties are used for cultivation “in Siccagno”, such as the Pizzutello (Slow Food Presidium). More recently, smaller varieties such as Datterino have been used because of their adaptability to environmental and climatic factors as well as their resistance to pests, which means that chemical or synthetic treatments are not required.

Short supply chain

Sustainability

When producing the “Siccagno”, not a single drop of water is taken from the planet and no chemical or synthetic products are used. The environment it comes from is therefore fully respected.
The tomatoes do not contain GMOs. They are planted, cultivated and harvested by hand reducing mechanical work to a minimum and thus reducing CO2 emissions, loss of fertility due to compaction and fnally soil erosion.
Three-yearly agronomic rotations are carried out to encourage the natural balance of the soil elements.

Excellence

Passata di Pomodoro fully reflects the sensory qualities and the qualitative and nutritional characteristics of the typical Sicilian tomato.
the passata produced by Cooperativa Rinascita stands out on the market because it contains no additives or preservatives, has a very high yield as it contains less water than irrigated varieties, and is very dense, tasty, and concentrated.
